Human Resources Tips - Verbal Interview Give-Aways - Learning When Job Applicants Are Lying

There are many ways to spot deception when talking to people, but you must be careful not to rely on any one technique because there are also a multitude of personalities, motivations and cultural differences.

One thing I have noticed is that people who are deceiving tend to make more verbal mistakes than folks that are honest, however in a job interview many times the applicant will be nervous, so nervous they will make mistakes anyway.

So, how can you tell the difference then? Well, sometimes you can tell by the number of times the applicant uses themselves as a reference, although be careful with this if the applicant has been self-employed and has a strong air of self-confidence about him New Jersey auto accident attorney her. Researchers have found that the number of times an applicant, pauses, uses pause words like;

  • Hmm
  • Basically
  • Ah
  • Uh
  • Etc

Silent pauses before beginning a statement are also of interest, or asking to repeat the question, as the lying applicant is using this time to carefully choose their words or create another tale, and/or cover the tracks on a previous lie. You can also watch for lengthy answers that lead into stories and more stories to answer a simple question, as if to explain or prove their answer is the truth, as why would they go to such lengths?

Now, sometimes you can be fooled by all this and so you really have to watch carefully and anything that strikes you as a question mark do like our State Department does; "trust, but verify." There is no substitute for verification, so, please think on this.
