Email Copywriting Tips For Today, Tomorrow and Forever

Once upon a time a successful technical writer decided email copywriting was an even better career choice for her. She applied all the things she knew about writing--details, accuracy, clear accident at work easy to follow instructional copy. But for some reason she met with dismal failure until she learned the secrets of ecommerce internet marketing from a mysterious visitor.

This mysterious visitor who taught this poor desperate technical writer was a person --well, somewhat like me. Yes, there are many experts online today who can teach you all about online writing. It has becoming quite the fad. But there are only a few masters in the trade. This article is not about whom to pay $500 an hour to for copywriting services, however. But instead here are a few tips for good online writing:

1) Inspire in your copy
2) Write dynamite headlines
3) Talk about benefits not features
4) Tell a good story -- everyone likes stories, fables, tall tales
5) Read, re-read and proof your email before tapping "Send"
6) Be better than your competitors
7) Be helpful, charming, fascinating and inspiring

Email copywriting is a skill indeed. Study the fundamentals. Read and collect good copy when it arrives in your mailbox or over the Internet. When people sell info products online, information ebooks or what have you -- they often hire professional copywriters to craft their long sales letters. Why? Because these letters are worth their cost in gold--the return can be so great.

When you first learn how to set up an online business, it's easy to forget that copywriting skills used in sales letters are also important for emails. Yes, emails are sales copy too. We can't just slop copy and words into an email and expect that customers will flock to our products, sales pages and click "Order Now."

You can make money without being a great copywriter. Have respect for the art, however. Take baby steps at first and know how to write a good letter and email. Hire someone on the cheap to help you with sales pages in the beginning. Study what the experts are doing and follow the basic rules of good copy--strong headlines (subject lines), story lines and conversational writing. Pursue the silver-lining of email copywriting, and one day you too will find that pot of gold.
